“Saint George's Day”
Saint George’s Day in Catalonia (La Diada de Sant Jordi) is celebrated on April 23 and is one of the region’s most beloved cultural festivals. It blends romance, literature, and Catalan identity. Traditionally, roses are given as symbols of love (inspired by the legend of Sant Jordi slaying the dragon, from whose blood a rose grew), and books are exchanged because April 23 is also associated with World Book Day (the death date of Cervantes and Shakespeare).
On this day, streets—especially in Barcelona—fill with book stalls, authors signing books, and rose vendors. Couples, friends, and families exchange gifts, and the city takes on a festive, literary atmosphere. In short: it’s Catalonia’s Valentine’s Day + Book Day, wrapped in medieval legend and modern cultural pride.
Client briefing: Draw inspiration from the legend of St George and use recognisable images from the story: the knight, the princess, the roses or the dragon.
Concept: A woman (the princess) with a rose in her hair watches the legend of Saint George come to life from the book.
